MA in Translation Studies: Chinese-English Option

(from September 2018)

This program begins September 2018 (as a pilot project). It consists of 27 units: 3 required courses, 4 optional courses and one final research paper, a commented translation. A proposal for the permanent addition of the Chinese-English Option as part of the MA in Translation Studies program will be developed and submitted to Senate of the University of Ottawa for approval, with an anticipated start date of September 2019.

Admission requirements:

· Same requirements as any other graduate admission to UOttawa, incl. TOEFL or IELTS score for international students;

· Possible interview by Skype or in person (to ensure viability as a possible MA student of TS);

· BA in Translation, or coursework/experience equivalent to Qualifying Year, or

· First year of MTI or MA in Translation Studies completed in China or abroad.

Program

The program can be completed in 3 trimesters: from early September to late August.

Students take 3 required courses and four from a selection of five optional courses; they complete the program with a commented translation of 3000-4000 words (length of text depends on difficulty) plus commentary. Course work should be completed during the Fall and Winter trimesters, with the commented translation during the Spring-Summer trimester.

  

Required Seminars : (9 units)

1. TRA5902B Theories of Translation / Théories de la traduction (3units.)

A critical and comparative survey of the many theoretical approaches to understanding translation. Structuralist, descriptive, functionalist models, cultural and sociological approaches, systems theory perspectives.

2. TRA5906B Language and translation/Langue et traduction (3 units.)

A study of the linguistic concepts that are of use in translation studies and related fields.

3. TRA6902B Discourse and Translation/Discours et traduction (3 units.)

A survey of conceptual models for the production, interpretation and reception of discourse as applied to translation. Enunciation, narration, argumentation. Pragmatics and sociocultural aspects of discourse.

Optional Seminars:  Students must choose four seminars (12 units) from the five listed below:

1. TRA5916B Translation Workshop (Chinese - English) / Atelier de traduction (3 units.) An intensiveadvanced course in the translation of pragmatic texts from Chinese to English. Focus is on producing excellent English, the B language.

2. TRA 6906BTraduction technique et spécialisée / Technical and Other Specialized Translation (3 units)This is an advanced course in technical and specialized translation into students’ A-language – from English to Chinese. It hones skills in translation, terminology, information-mining. (English-Chinese)

3. TRA5903B Computers and Translation / Informatique et traduction (3 units) Overview of advanced computational aids for human translation, with some hands-on practice (e.g. terminology management, desk-top publishing, grammar checking). Survey of machine and machine-aided translation. Analysis of machine translation output.

4. TRA6911B Méthodologie de la recherche traductologique / Research Methods in Translation Studies (3 units) This course covers research methods in translation studies at advanced levels.

5. Any other graduate course in the Faculty of Arts with permission of the School and the professor in charge of the course.


Spring and Summer Session (May-August)

TRA7995B Commented Translation / Traduction commentée (6 units.)

Text must be approved by the professor.
