Undergraduate Program in Chinese-English Translation – from September 2018

English competence/IELTS or TOEFL scores required by UOttawa

All students from MOU universities who are not Canadian citizens or landed immigrants pay international tuition fees.

Courses:

FALL semester:

TRA 4950H: Chinese-English Translation: This course reinforces the knowledge the students have already acquired in translating into their B language (English) and further develops their skills, focusing on English style, and types of writing. The course consists of intensive and regular translation assignments, praxis in the translation of general texts and sight translation.

TRA 4950J: English-Chinese Translation: This course reinforces the knowledge the students have already acquired in translating from English into their A language (Chinese). It further develops their skills in English comprehension and interpretation, and focuses on the meaningfulness of different text-types in English in order to render this into Chinese. The course will consist of intensive and regular translation assignments, praxis in the translation of general texts and sight translation.

TRA 4950K:  TRA 4950 K Chinese-English-Chinese Translation Praxis : the content of this course depends on teacher specializations. Any of the following (or other) topics may be offered: specialized translation, technical translation, subtitling, revision and post-editing, terminology/translation technology, sight translation, all focused on the language pair of Chinese-English.  

TRA 3313: English Writing Techniques: This is an intermediate level course in English writing, focused on the needs of the end-user.

One optional course in the Faculty of Arts (with permission of the relevant Department/Professor)

  

WINTER semester:

TRA 4950L: Chinese-English Translation II: This course continues work in translation practice into student’s B-language, focusing on specialized and technical texts. Revision exercises are included.

TRA 4950M: English-Chinese Translation II: This course offers advanced training in translation into the students’ A language, with a focus on specialized and technical texts. Work with Translation technologies is included.

TRA 4950N: Chinese-English-Chinese Translation Technology/Terminology: This course trains students in terminological work with Chinese-and English, and the applications and uses of translation technologies and translation ‘environments’ for the everyday practice of translation between these two languages.   Work in information-mining is included.

TRA 4950O: Consecutive Interpreting: Chinese-English-Chinese: This course trains students in the skills required for consecutive interpreting: public-speaking, note-taking, and interpreting.
